St. Louis Electrical Safety Tips

If you are concerned about a home safety hazard please call us. We will be happy to assess your situation and advise a recommended course of action. If you are ever in question about a safety issue, you should contact a professional licensed electrician immediately for a safety inspection.

One of the most common mistakes is improper use of extension cords and appliances that can cause fires. If you notice any cracked or cut cords you should replace them immediately. Extension cords should only be used for temporary situations. Make sure the extension cord is sized appropriately for your electrical load.

If a switch or outlet is unusually hot or discolored the circuit should be shut off and call an electrician immediately.   All electrical appliances should be kept away from any wet areas. Heaters and lamps should not be close to any drapes or combustible materials. Do not overload your outlets with extension cords.  

Replace any appliances that cause shocks, sparks to smokes.

Appliances with three-prong plugs require three prong outlets. 

Don't allow children to play around electrical appliances. 

Child proof your electrical outlets. 

Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors that are hard wired and have a battery backup
